城壁のケーパー

　モザイクで有名なラヴェンナの近くの小さな町、ルーゴの城壁。苔で薄っすらと緑に色にづくレンガの隙間から、ケーパー（フウチョウボク）の枝が垂れ下がっている。

　ソロモン王の時代のイスラエルの土地では、その蕾が媚薬の一種だと考えられていた。だから伝道の書１２：５において、いくつかの聖書は「欲望（特に性欲の意）」と意訳している。

伝道の書１２：５

（口語訳）

彼らはまた高いものを恐れる。恐ろしいものが道にあり、あめんどうは花咲き、いなごはその身をひきずり歩き、その欲望は衰え、人が永遠の家に行こうとするので、泣く人が、ちまたを歩きまわる。

（文語訳）

かかる人々は高き者を恐る畏しき者多く途にあり 巴旦杏は花咲くまた蝗もその身に重くその嗜欲は廢る 人永遠の家にいたらんとすれば哭婦衢にゆきかふ

彼らはまた高い所を恐れ、道でおびえる。アーモンドの花は咲き、いなごはのろのろ歩き、ふうちょうぼくは花を開く。だが、人は永遠の家へと歩いて行き、嘆く者たちが通りを歩き回る。

　おそらくDarby's English Translationが最も原義に近いのではないかと思う。年老いてしまって媚薬さえ効果がない、というニュアンスである。

　お昼時、小雨降る中傘も差さずに、東洋人のおじさんがいきなり何の変哲もない城壁の前に立ち止まって、写真を撮っているのを見、通りがかりのイタリア人が不思議そうに一瞬壁を見上げ、そして足早に通り過ぎて行った。
