Youtubeで偶然、私が中学生の時に地元の図書館で借りて何度も聞いていたゴスペルを見つけた。その深い声に混じったレコードの雑音まで同じなので感動してしまった。
当時は何も知らないで聴いていたが、このPaul Robesonという人の人生を改めて調べてみると、本当に興味深い人物である。牧師の息子であり、法律学校を卒業し、１２か国語を流暢に話し、歌手であり、俳優であり、共産主義支持者であった。
彼がこの心を打つ黒人霊歌を歌ったとき、自分の罪のために十字架にかけられた主イエスに対してどのような思いで歌っていたのかは今となってはわからないが、彼のその波乱万丈で複雑怪奇な略歴を知って聴くと、また違う意味でもそのメッセージに考えさせられるのである。
